Uncomfortable Peace

Institutions always seek new members,
whether it's good for those members or not,
like amoebae consuming their neighbors.
They awe with impressive conformity to rules,
while all around them humans suffer
in spite of (and often because of) those rules.
There's no stopping it. But I for one
say no sometimes, when I know better
than the proselytizing adherents, which happens
quite often I'm afraid. But as long
as they let me say no, we'll have peace,
but uncomfortable peace, the peace of a truce,
which rests on a razor's edge.
