Even In Our Own Hearts

They journeyed together
on the ship of fate,
not lost, not quite found,
always reaching, never grasping...

Was there a tomorrow to answer
their longing? Or were they
forever adrift, underneath changing stars?

We know who they are. We
were like them, before love
arrived, with its promise of pain.

But which path leads to happiness?
Does any path? Or are paths
insignificant, mattering only
as a kind of ephemera, the stage
upon which the same human affairs
play out time after time?

We would choose well, but in the end
we must fight for ourselves, if we
ever intend to matter, even in our own hearts.
