Loss of Power

Who can remember, when tomorrow arrives,
why today meant so much, means so little now,
in the fading light of a distant and dying star?
We press on, not because of significance, but
in spite of the lack of it, waiting for nothing more
than ourselves and our mysteries coming to light
in the somber gaze of the morning star, the one
that replaces its parent, and leaves little room
for investigations into the meaning
of what we are or would like to be.

Is love ever safe without safeguards,
without some communal protection
in the form of punishment for transgression?
No, love is not safe even so, it is never safe,
life is not safe, and we must make amends
for ourselves and our natures in some other way.

But what ways are available? How can one love
without damaging self and others, without
some restrictions? But if these restrictions
are not self-imposed, will they really survive
the night terrors, the force of awakened desire?

Only the restraints that one chooses
can truly bind, without degradation.
All other restraint will make weak
and pathetic the ones who would be strong.

But strength is not all, we also
must love...but can love endure
without loss of power?
