Awakening

There was only one way up
to the heavens, only one
true answer to life's most terrible demands,
and her name was Desire, brutal master
but competent friend. She taught birds
how to sing, and inspired a hope
that would never relinquish its grip. She was
there, forever, and always.

Would Buddha relent? Or was suffering
inevitable either way? There was something to gain
through denial, the clarity of empty vision,
but the main thrust of life does and shall remain
the libido, the center of man's deepest hope.

Yet the inner guide must awaken before
man or woman walks free, and there's
no guarantee, for this wakening
answers a call that comes from another
who may or may never appear.
