The ego is not the point, nor is the individual,
for there is no self without others, no I without
multitudes of influence. Whitman knew this much, and we
carry on in his shadow, for what is a person,
and what warrants safeguarding? Not the individual's
lonely solitude, not some constructed persona, but only
the deeper flow of life that moves through us all.
