Staring Still

I stood staring for longer than would be polite,
and you stared too...before taking flight. Was that glance
not the surest sign, and the look of pain that came after?
You knew I knew, and we both know now
that these ties that bind are unlike any other.
I doubt your escape, or mine. I doubt
that we could escape, or find any way out of love.
I stood staring, and part of me stands staring still
until you come down offstage into destiny.
