The Chase (She Who Flees)

Man is in love and loves what vanishes,
what more is there to say?
Yeats, Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen

Quite a lot, it turns out.
A flame flickers in the breeze,
but it does not go out, does not vanish,
if one can hold on through the ceremonies
of presence, summoning again she who flees.
She brings men to their knees, and she
does not obey, but she thrives at the center
and still waits for visitors, even those
not yet worthy. She changes their essence,
or wakens their essence, with fire,
the spark of eternal desire, the flame
of the stars, placed deep in hearts
brought to life by the hope of fulfillment
that never burns out. She knows what she's about,
and her supplicants cannot help asking her
where she is going and where she has been.

Does she vanish for those who know?
Or does she entice to the chase?
