She carries authentic composure,
the confidence of one who knows well
how to do what she sets out to do.
She knows inside and out her violin
and the world of sound. She brings
into being a brightness, overshadowed
only by her smile, which appears
when the audience hears what she hears.
She is lovely, and later she smiles at me,
and I know I will keep that smile safe
in some vault, for a rainy day.
What strange resonance summons me back
to encounter her, just at that moment,
with perfect timing? And what strange resonance
summons me now to remember?
Likely folly. But fools are spared
the burden of pretending to have life
under control. Therefore lovers are foolish
and must be so. But this is not love,
not yet, not without some reply.
What does she feel? Is she flattered, annoyed,
confused, excited? "This poet at least
has confidence," she mutters, "but is there
anything there?"
I don't know, just a glimmer, a vague recollection
of something I've seen in my dreams.
