When the faithful discover eros
it ravishes body and mind. They must learn
a devotion less than total. They must learn
how to love and yet hold back some love
in reserve, for themselves, for a rainy day.
They find no lover worthy of the love
they were taught to carry, and soon it burns up.

Saint Teresa, come
and instruct these holy pilgrims
in the ways of the earth,
