Female Deity

God works for women, but men
need a female deity, to summon
the inner life, to make active
the inner feminine, which never
was satisfied by love on earth.
But does the deity come to save
or to torment? Gods can be resisted,
and they should be, when they contradict each other,
when they push against the flow of life itself.
The sacred feminine deserves respect,
but so does the sacred masculine.
Seductive illusions pull a man outside himself
and into the dark of chthonic energies,
the land of Woman's rule. If he would survive there,
he must bring a sturdy mind, and hold fast to
the golden thread that leads back to the light.
Ariadne, I do not expect to worship you,
although your myth points in that direction. I have seen
too much of who you really are, of what all women are.
But you do make a potent symbol of regeneration,
not unlike Demeter, though more forceful. Holy wife
of Dionysus, turn the tables, change the stakes,
and let us realign around that ruptured place.
You are not the first woman who has sought my worship,
but you may be the last, having finally answered
my deepest question. Even sex can be sacred, and even
the most fervent worship must keep in the back of its mind
that our animal side never entirely tires, cannot be expunged.
You awaken libido. For that I do thank you. But is it
libido or libido dominandi, a drive for love or for power?
The evidence points to the latter,
and so I again bid adieu,
but there's something about you
that keeps you here as my muse.
